From Party Lines to Polka Dances: Ernie Schmidt's Story

At 93 years old, Erine has witnessed nearly a century of change in rural America. In December of 1955, at just 22 years old, he started telephone service on his farm with Kanokla. Nearly 70 years later, he remains one of our longest-standing customers.

During a recent visit, Ernst shared stories from a different era. He remembered the days of party lines and proudly recalled being line number three. He laughed as he talked about how his wife and sister-in-law would switch to speaking German so others on the party line couldn't understand their conversations.

Ernst also shared memories of the community dances he and his wife enjoyed over the years. From hosting polka dances in his shed in Freeport to traveling throughout the area to dance with friends, those gatherings created memories that have lasted a lifetime.

One of his favorite Kanokla memories comes from the early days of telephone service. Having received service in Freeport before many of his friends in Oklahoma, Ernie enjoyed telling them just how good his Kanokla telephone line was.

As we listened to his stories, it became clear that Kanokla's history is about much more than technology. It's about the people, families, and communities connected through the years.
